A single source of truth is a governance decision, not a dashboard feature

Dashboards become trustworthy when teams agree who owns the underlying definitions and data.

Start with the disagreement

When sales and finance report different revenue figures, a new chart will not resolve the difference. Ask which transactions each team includes, when they recognise them and how adjustments are handled. Document the definition before automating it.

Choose authoritative sources

Each important metric needs a source system, an owner and a refresh schedule. Some measures may require combining several systems. The transformation logic should be visible and tested so that people can explain the number on screen.

Build confidence through reconciliation

Compare dashboard results with existing trusted reports during a transition period. Investigate exceptions and record the reasons. Confidence grows when discrepancies are handled openly rather than hidden behind a cleaner interface.

Review definitions as the business changes

New products, acquisitions and reporting obligations can change what a metric means. A small governance group can approve updates and communicate them. The real achievement is not one dashboard; it is a shared understanding.
