Buying enterprise software in Africa: evaluate the full operating cost

A software licence is only one part of the investment. Support, integration and adoption often determine whether the purchase delivers value.

Map the complete journey

Ask what happens between contract signature and the first useful business outcome. Include configuration, data migration, integrations, testing, training and post-launch support. Each stage needs a realistic owner and budget.

Check commercial assumptions

Licensing can depend on users, modules, usage or service levels. Clarify renewal terms, currency, tax treatment and what happens when requirements change. A low entry price can be attractive, but the comparison should reflect the expected operating model.

Test a real workflow

A demonstration should follow an end-to-end scenario familiar to your team, not only the vendor's best-looking screens. Ask how exceptions, approvals and reporting work. Bring future users into the evaluation early.

Plan for continuity

Consider how data can be exported, who supports the system locally and what happens if the implementation partner changes. Good procurement protects the organisation's ability to operate after the launch.
